WHAT IS A GRATEFUL PIE?
THE FRENCH-CANADIAN Tourtière
A traditional Tourtière will forever evoke cherished memories for Grateful Pies founder Farika Holden. Living in the UK away from the classic Canadian Christmas table , and wanting to create new memories with her new family and friends, the Grateful Pie was born. Based on her Grandmother’s recipe, modified it to be plant based, the spirit of the Tourtière remains; One Pie Fits All.
Tourtière is a French Canadian meat pie dish originating from the province of Quebec, usually made with minced pork, veal or beef and potatoes. The Tourtière was traditionally eaten on Christmas Eve, and is now a staple in many Canadian homes throughout the year. The name "tourtière" is derived from its filling, the tourte—the French name for the passenger pigeon that is now extinct in North America—was used historically.
THE MAGIC OF LENTILS!
In order for lovers of meat, veggies and all things savoury to unite with a pie that fits all, many meat alternatives were considered to create our plant-based tourtière. We chose to substitute meat for green lentils as, not only do lentils fit the bill in delivery taste, but they are also the perfect texture and a great source of nourishment.
Lentils are a great source of B vitamins, folate, iron, and potassium and they also contain high levels of protein and fiber. A 105g serving of cooked lentils provides about 12 grams of protein and, with such high protein content, you are sure to be fuelled up all day long.
Lentils are one of the most nutritious foods that cleanse the liver. In fact, their detox properties aren’t the best thing about this particular legume. Health benefits of lentils include but aren’t limited to: Protection from cancer.
